HOUGOMONT - HERZOGIN CECILIE

Under tow together. 4 masted Barque "Herzogin Cecilie", built in 1902 at Bremerhaven by Rickmers for Norddeutscher Lloyd. Built as a training ship, she had an enormous poop of 194' and carried a big spread of canvas. She was steered from a midships wheel and is credited with a speed of 17 knots on occasions. Capt. G Erickson bought her for 4,000 pounds just after World War 1, and she made several speedy trips in the Australian grain trade. In 1931 she logged 360 nautical miles in 24 hours. The vessel went aground off Sewer Mill Cove on the South Devon coast on 25 - 4 - 1936. By the light of car headlights ashore the crew was rescued by breeches-buoy. Eventually the ship was refloated and beached at the small sandy cove of Starehole Bay, but the sand shifted under her and she broke her back.
