This small, heavily armed twin screw steel cruiser was built in 1883 at Newcastle-on-Tyne by William Armstrong & Co to the order of the South Australian Government. She was commissioned on the 19th June 1884, (her captain was J.C.P. Walcot, RN) and was built for the Colony of South Australia when it decided to establish a naval force for the protection of its coasts and harbours. For her size she was an exceptionally heavily armed vessel. She served in the Boer War, taking South Australian soldiers to the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.
