Charles and Elizabeth Chandler and four children were among those sailing on the John Pirie, arriving in Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island on 16 August, 1836. We know a little about the lives of the family before they sailed: Charles, an agricultural labourer, was born in 1804 and probably married Elizabeth in the mid-1820s. The family lived in East Acton, Middlesex, England. Of their four children accompanying them to South Australia, we know that the oldest, Elizabeth, was 10, William was 5, and the youngest was about 12 months old. Moving to the mainland, Charles was employed by the S.A. Company as a shepherd in the Noarlunga area, later taking up farming at Happy Valley. Chandler's Hill bears the family name. Mrs Elizabeth Chandler never arrived in South Australia. She died aboard the John Pirie on Friday 1 July 1836, survived by her husband and four children.

direct descendant from Charles, William etc. Do you have any info eg why did some of the family split away to settle Yorke Peninsula?

Sarah Eleanor Chandler, daughter of Charles Chandler, married William Henry Hickman in 1853. In 1871 they established a farm near Edithburgh on Yorke Peninsula. They farmed till 1887 when they retired to Edithburgh. William died in 1897 and Sarah in 1902. They are buried at Edithburgh.
