Journey Notes

Arrival of the Clara The boats started on Thursday morning for the Clara, but on getting along-side it was found that typhus had made its appearance among the immigrants; the first case having been under treatment on the 11th December, since which date three cases had occurred, two of which were fatal, one adult having died on the previous morning. Under the circumstances the vessel was not boarded, as the Assistant Health Officer deemed it prudent to place her in quarantine until the Health Officer, Dr.Duncan, had visited the vessel. The passage from England has been about the average, being 113 days from Southampton, and has been diversified with the various changes reported by vessels completing a long passage. From the report of the surgeon on the sanitary conditions of the vessel, it appears that there had been nine deaths on board of the following descriptions:- On November 15, 1 infant, from dysentery; on November 23, 1 infant, from dysentery; on November 24, 1 adult, from dysentery; on December 11, 1 adult from fever; on December 22, 1 adult from dysentery; on the same day, 1 child, from the croup; on December 31, 1 child, from water on the brain; on January 3, 1 child, from croup; on January 19, 1 adult, from fever....
